The rural Darling Downs town of Cecil Plains is just over an hour's drive from Toowoomba.
Cecil Plains is home to a stately historic homestead, now known as "Country Stay Bed and Breakfast" located at the eastern entrance to town adjacent to the Toowoomba - Cecil Plains Road. The homestead was the focal point of life on Cecil Plains Station which was claimed in 1841 by Henry Stuart Russell.
The history of the station is inscribed on a plaque at the entrance to the historic Homestead. The property was named in honour of Henry Stuart Russell's mother, Cecil Charlotte Pemberton. The homestead started as a single slab cottage built by Henry and his brother Sydneham on the western bank of the Condamine River. Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt often sat on the homestead verandah discussing his expeditions with the two brothers. James Taylor bought the property in 1859. His family held it until 1916 when it was purchased by the Crown for a soldier's settlement. In 1919 the property was thrown open for selection.
There are more hints of spirits long-departed at the Old Station Cemetery. Tombstone details have been preserved in a rustic hardwood memorial surrounding a huge gum tree in the centre of this historic cemetery.
